My Perspective on Black & White Photography
What’s going on guys!
Today, I’m writing about a photography concept that I have just recently stumbled upon after reviewing and retouching some photos from my last trip to New York City. After spending some time away from reviewing my photo gallery, I found that I was seeing these photos within a new light of appreciation for the moments I captured. Many of the city landscapes that I originally found to look like every other corner of the New York City streets during the trip have now become bright, unique, and intricate compared to the small town photography I usually spend my time with.
However, there was a small group of photos that I had originally intended to come out ‘better’ than what I ended up with. Either some of the edges on my focus points were blurry or the color from the city landscape overwhelmed the image. With that said, I decided to edit the photos to black and white. The final result? Well, I’ll let you be the judge for yourself…
Now, in my opinion even though these photos didn’t sell me on them in color, the impact that the black and white composition forces us to past the ‘post-production’ of an image and see the picture for the story it is trying to tell. I think this is the reason we the move towards film photography today, where that nostalgic aspect of photography of placing more time and thought behind each shot. In comparison, black and white photos allow us to look past any mechanical flaws of the photo and look at the meaning of the image itself.
